Learn About Our Church

Our Beliefs

We believe in the Holy Bible, the Old and New Testaments, to be the verbal, plenary, inspired Word of God; inerrant in the original writing, and it is the only supreme and final authority in faith and life (II Timothy 3:16, 17; II Peter 1:21).

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:1; Matthew 1:18–25; John 10:30; Acts 5:3–4).

We believe in God the Father, perfect in holiness, boundless in love, infinite wisdom, measureless in power. We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayers, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ, His Son (Exodus 15:11; Psalm 19; Psalm 86:15; Ephesians 4:32).

We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God; conceived and born of the virgin Mary, and is truly God and man, and that He is the Savior and Mediator of the human race; that He suffered, bled, and died on the cross for us; was buried, and on the third day rose from the grave; that He ascended into heaven and is seated on the right hand of God to intercede for us; that He will come again in the last day to judge the quick and the dead (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18–25; Colossians 2:9)

We believe in the Holy Spirit, and that He is equal in being with the Father and the Son; that His purpose is to reprove the world of sin, of judgment, and of righteousness; and to regenerate, sanctify, indwell, comfort, empower, and to guide all those who believe in Jesus Christ (John 14:26; 16:7–11; I Corinthians 6:19; Titus 3:5).

We believe that God in three persons created the heavens and the earth, the visible and invisible; that He sustains, protects, and governs these in keeping with His divine purpose and will, with gracious for the welfare of men, and His glory (Genesis 1:1–2; Colossians 1:16–17).

We believe that man was created in the image of God, that he sinned and thereby incurred not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God, and that all human beings are born with a sinful nature and are now sinners by birth and by choice, positively inclined to evil, and are therefore under just condemnation to eternal ruin without defense or excuse (Genesis 2:17; Psalm 51:5; 58:3; Romans 1:20; 5:12–21; I Corinthians 2:14).

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood (Romans 5:9; I Corinthians 15:1–4; II Corinthians 5:21; I Peter 1:18–19; 2:24).

We believe that all who truly repent of theirs sins and believe on and receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit, and are thereby children of God and are eternally saved (John 3:3; Galatians 3:24–26; I John 5:13).

We believe that all the saved are called into a life of separation from all worldly and sinful practices; and a life of Christian devotion and service to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Romans 12:1–2; I John 2:15–17).

We believe that Satan is literal and personal, the agent of the fall, the prince and power of this world, and that he shall be judged and eternally punished (Ephesians 2:1–4; Revelation 20:2–10).

We believe in the fellowship of the Christian church composed of true believers, through which the Word of God is preached by men divinely called; the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Table are administered, and worship of the living God is observed to edify true believers and for the conversion of sinners unto God (Matthew 28:18–20; I Corinthians 11:23–26; Ephesians 4:11–13).

We believe that immersion is the only mode of baptism taught and commanded in the Scriptures, that it has no saving power, and that the new birth, which comes through repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, is the Scriptural prerequisite to baptism. Therefore, only those who are old enough to believe for themselves should be baptized (Acts 2:38; Romans 6:1–5).

We believe that the Lord’s table is a memorial of the death of Jesus Christ, and that only those who have been saved through faith in His atoning blood and are walking in obedient fellowship with Him ought to partake of it. We practice close communion (I Corinthians 11:23–32).

We believe that the Bible teaches that the officers of the New Testament Church are pastor and deacon. These positions should be held by men only (Acts 15; I Timothy 2:12).

We believe in the “blessed hope” the personal, bodily, pretribulational, premillenial, and imminent return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ (Matthew 24:44; John 14:1–3; II Thessalonians 2).

We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead, both of the saved and unsaved, in the future judgment of the saved of the earth at the judgment seat of Christ to receive their reward for faithfulness and service, and that the lost of all the ages will appear at the Great White Throne judgment for their final disposition in the eternal lake of fire (I Thessalonians 4:16–18; Revelation 20).

The History of Cromwell United Bible Church

Originally, our church was the United Brethren Church of Orbisonia, PA located on Cromwell Street. Around 1970, the United Brethren denomination merged with the United Methodist denomination. This event led the congregation under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Theodore R. Bowers to separate from the United Methodist denomination. For a short time, the congregation became a part of the United Brethren in Christ denomination and worshiped in the building which now houses the library on Cromwell Street in Orbisonia, PA.

On November 29, 1971, the church purchased a four acre plot of ground on Hill Valley Road located in Cromwell Township. The church broke ground and began to construct the present church building. The building was financed by faith and the process of construction took several years. At first, the church finished the basement and met there with no second floor above for quite sometime. Several couples were even married in the basement of the church. As the Lord provided the funds, the majority of the construction was finished around the close of 1975. The entire building project was finished and dedicated on April 29, 1979, We are indeed grateful for the many hands who worked, gave, and sacrificed to place our beautiful church here in Hill Valley. In 1976, the Lord lead the congregation to make several good decisions. In April, the church decided by a vote to remove itself from the United Brethren in Christ denomination and become an independent Bible church. Effective June 1, 1976, the church became Cromwell United Bible Church, with 42 charter members.

Because of the failing health of Reverend Bowers, the church asked the assistant Pastor Neil Stevens felt the Lord leading him elsewhere and the congregation called Rev. Tex Dunbar as pastor.

The ministry continued under the leadership of Rev. Dunbar with the additional construction of the parsonage and the church garage. Along with these building projects, the work of evangelism grew with the development of a bus ministry and Word of Life clubs on Wednesday evenings, and a full-week camping program each summer. After twelve years of ministry, it was with great sadness that Tex Dunbar felt led to step down as pastor in 1994. That fall was a challenging time of faith as the leadership sought for God’s direction. After much prayer, the church called Rev. Jim MacQuarrie who served as pastor from 1995 to 2002.

Under Pastor Jim MacQuarrie’s ministry the Bible Clubs on Wednesday evenings grew out of the church building. The congregation voted to expand the church building with a multi-purpose addition. Construction began in the summer of 1999 and dedication of the building occurred on June 4, 2000.

Darren McClintock was called as pastor in 2004 and led the church for 11 years, departing in 2015. In 2017, the church called Titus Palmer to lead as pastor.

Over the years, Cromwell United Bible Church has faced times of blessing and trial, yet our mission remains the same. It is still our desire to know God more by the study of His Word.
